Youtube is on permanent mute

As f yesterday, the mute button is on with everything in Youtube. Nothing happens when I presenter on the mute button although it does respond when I press enter on other buttons. (I'm a JAWS user.)
Any ideas? I've of course tried using the space bar and combinations of control + space or enter keys.
The buttons are also now reading as embedded and that is different-a youtube upgrade, maybe?
Thanks for any help.

This isn't JAWS or any reader. Go into Control Panel and find Flash and enter on that. I used the Search box in Control panel to do this on Windows 7.
Then for each of the tabs find the delete all or clear all button and check all the boxes.
That clears all Flash-specific cache and you'll be fine after that.

I'm having the same problem, and leo's fix didn't work.

After you do what I mentioned in Control Panel, then launch a Youtube movie. Your browser should have been closed when you were in Control Panel.
Anyway, try and set focus with your reader on one of the player buttons, then press tab or something to get the system focus there. Now turn off your virtual mode insert z in JAWS or insert space with NVDA, then press the up arrow button a few times to bring up the volume. That should reset it unless your problem is somehow different.

Guys, have you updated to the most recent adobe flash player? I haven't yet and I'm dealing with teh same issue. And I'm not using jaws, so it's not a jaws issue. Just like leo said.

Post 6 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Friday, 04-Oct-2013 17:28:51

I know it isn't a jaws issue, and yes, my browser was closed when I did it.
also, it happens on any sight where the youtube player is embedded, in case that was unclear to anyone.
and, yes, I'm sure I have the latest flash player version.

Oh great. This started for me today. I'm using Jaws 14 and Windows 8. Guess I'm off to check my flash version and then do what Leo said.

Odd. I am really not sure as to why this happened. It seems to be a world-wide mass event, FaceBook and Twitter are loaded down with news about this issue.

Post 9 by bea (I just keep on posting!) on Saturday, 05-Oct-2013 10:32:13

Having the same problem. Everything on you tube is muted. Using windows 7 and jaws 13. Maybe you tube shut down with the government in protest.

Post 10 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Saturday, 05-Oct-2013 10:44:01

I'm running windows 7, jaws 14.
interesting thought, bea. I didn't think of that, but I bet that's what it is.

Post 11 by Runner229 (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Saturday, 05-Oct-2013 11:06:51

I have sound on YouTube and I have Windows 7 with JFW 13. Something must be up though if several people are reporting this problem. I also tested YouTube from my phone and there was sound on there, too. I wish I was more tech sabby so I could help more, but saying something is better than nothing I suppose.

Post 12 by Shell Script (I just keep on posting!) on Saturday, 05-Oct-2013 11:20:59

It has nothing to do with the government. Something's fucked up somewhere. I only have audio on my iPod as far as YouTube is concerned.

Post 13 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Saturday, 05-Oct-2013 12:39:31

how can you be so sure? just sayin.

Post 14 by zackmack2000 ( extreme killer of the keys) on Saturday, 05-Oct-2013 12:52:30

well, I use a mac, safari lodes up youtube ok I suppose, but still, I have had buffering issues like crazy, also have used mactubes and still have the same results. the mac used to not have any problems what soever watching youtube vids until I think sometime last year when it is just all out horible. not to mention, if i'm on a skype call with someone and trynig to watch something from youtube, my connection fucks up and everything crashes. so yeah. something is seriously fucked up.

Post 15 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Saturday, 05-Oct-2013 13:24:08

It's not government related but it is all over the Internet.
The way I know Chelsea is that the video continues to move, the percentage I can see moving in the graphic where the time left is.
Anyway I'm guessing there are a few reasons, obviously my methods haven't helped everyone, but it's a player compatibility issue I'm guessing. Something changed on their end.
For the record, when I cleared the Flash cache, I also checked the boxes to get rid of any licensing data in case some sort of keying or checksum data had changed and they hadn't updated it. I'm not that knowledgeable on how that sort of licensing works, so it was one of those scientific wild-ass guesses (SWAG), you could probably underscore the wild ass part of that one though.

Post 16 by johndy (I just keep on posting!) on Saturday, 05-Oct-2013 13:27:33

I haven't tried the methods yet to see what's going on with Youtube and whether I could clear up the problem, but it seems to me that whenever I've gone onto the site recently and my Adobe player needed updating, Windows 7 automatically told me to update. Haven't done that in about a month, and the last time I was able to watch anything was just two days ago.

Post 17 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Saturday, 05-Oct-2013 14:28:22

I, too, cleared the licensing thing you mentioned, leo.
like Johndy, I've been able to listen to things up until a couple days ago.

Post 18 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Saturday, 05-Oct-2013 18:48:11

Yeah, the last thing I watched was an episode of Jesse Ventura's Conspiracy Theory show that was banned from True TV after it's initial airing in 2010. Basically it was about the data collection centers, or fusion centers, and FEMA camps going up all over the place. Good thing I heard about this problem with youtube or I would have been really freaked out. lol

Post 19 by vh (This site is so "educational") on Saturday, 05-Oct-2013 19:31:55

Well, thanks, Leo and rite away, for at least trying! It's at least comforting to know I'm not the only one experiencing this. I don't FB or twitter, so who knows how long I'd have thought it was just little old me.

Post 20 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Saturday, 05-Oct-2013 21:57:28

I saw this on an Adobe forem. Apparently it comes from the Google products forem. Apparently Google owns youtube??? Who knew???
Anyway, here's what it says.

"Thanks for your patience, all. We have been aware of this issue. It should be resolved soon.

While this issue is live, please try clearing your browser's cache and cookies, or the workaround that rdhuston posted:

The mute will keep coming back for each video you watch, but you can get your sound back each time by pausing the video, right clicking the little X by the speaker symbol and then clicking the speaker symbol itself. Then start the video again. Kind of a pain, but at least you can hear the videos until the problem is fixed."

Yeah, I knew Google had YouTube under it's wing. But no shocker there, they've almost owned everything.

Post 22 by bea (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 06-Oct-2013 10:39:54

can we even do this clicking on a symbol deal? Any ideas or fixes for a totally blind person?

Post 23 by louisa (move over school!) on Sunday, 06-Oct-2013 11:08:15

Same problem here. Complete silents. I'll try the methord in the second post, and see if it helps. I'm using jaws 12 and windows xp. Hopefully this problem can be sorted out, at least I'm not the only one, smiles.

Post 24 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Sunday, 06-Oct-2013 11:49:33

Bea, the way for you to get aroud that is in the second post I think:
Set focus on a flash control like the play button then turn off the virtual cursor and use up arrow to increase the volume - that is a Youtube specific keystroke - that will bring the sound up. Just tap it until you hear sound. Then you can turn on the virtual cursors again.

Post 25 by JH_Radio (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 06-Oct-2013 14:24:29

I'm using Windows XP SP3 and IE8 and dont have any problem with Youtube or Yourtube.
I haven't tried it with firefox as i dont use that browser often but have when IE8 fails to work on a site which is rare.
I am running Jaws15.
I also have the latest version of flash player installed for Internet explorer, and for other browsers .

Post 26 by Shell Script (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 06-Oct-2013 19:03:56

It isn't working with Chrome, either.

Post 27 by zackmack2000 ( extreme killer of the keys) on Monday, 07-Oct-2013 13:55:09

as I said I haven't tried this with i e or anything because well I use a mac but I do have a vm of xp on here. thankfully now a days I just either use mactubes or if that fails like hell just use my phone to watch it. the strange thing is, if I watch it from my phone, I have to turn off wifi because if I don't the same buffering results happen.

Post 28 by bermuda-triangulese (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Monday, 07-Oct-2013 16:20:09

go into internet explorer addons, disable flash, use the html5 player, then you can turn the volume up with keystrokes given above.

Post 29 by WillieTheWoof (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Monday, 07-Oct-2013 16:45:11

Using NVDA when playing a video there is an item that it calls imbedded object. press enter on that and then use up arrow to increast the volume. This worked for me. jaws didn't even see the flash object and if it did didn't identify it.

Post 30 by Shell Script (I just keep on posting!) on Monday, 07-Oct-2013 18:00:04

My friend just clicked on unmute and it just worked for me. She's sighted, so Leo's suggestion is a bit longer, but it did work on my laptop. She did her way at school.

Post 31 by johndy (I just keep on posting!) on Tuesday, 08-Oct-2013 18:50:03

Don't know if anyone else knows, but I just now attempted Youtube and played a couple of my favorite videos. Near as I can tell, it's back up and running and off mute. Cheers!--John

Score!!! Also, just fyi, I posted a link to an accessible interface to youtube in the topic Accessibility of Youtube. I'm glad the regular site is back in business though.
